2019 Community Defenders Seminar: Get, Admit, Acquit

Saturday, January 26, 2019, 4:30 PM

The University of San Diego School of Law & Community Defenders, Inc. presents: Get, Admit, Acquit We face innumerable challenges as criminal defense attorneys. Perhaps none is more daunting than finding the time, skills, and fortitude to thoroughly investigate to develop support for the defense case. But doing so enables us to protect our clients’ interests at every level of litigation. The Supreme Court has consistently held, in the context of defining the contours of effective representation, that defense counsel cannot make important decisions without sufficient preparation and investigation. Thus, the Supreme Court recognized that our role “is critical to the ability of the adversarial system to produce just results.” Strickland v. Washington, 466 U.S. 668, 685 (1984). This seminar will present methods and legal authority that we can use to achieve “just results” at both trial and post-conviction levels. Experienced trial and post-conviction attorneys will discuss investigation and record-collection resources and techniques, and how to ensure the prosecutor preserves and produces Brady material.
